Exhibition
View this splendid display of the vibrant
multi-ethnic cultures of Singapore. Visitors can gain
insights into the lifestyles of the four ethnic groups
by trying their hands on the traditional instruments,
ethnic costumes and even walk on a five-footway
(corridor) of a traditional shop-house, all within one
gallery. Daily utilitarian items from yesteryears are
also on display.
The museum is open from 9am to 6pm, Tuesdays through
Sundays.

Imaging
Selves
This exhibition inaugurates the
Singapore Art Museum's Permanent Collection Exhibition
Programme. Five galleries are dedicated to the display
of the museum's fine collection of Southeast Asian
modern and contemporary art. Featuring up to 100 works
of art, Imaging Selves takes a look at the construction
and representation of identity and self through the
genre of portraiture.

The
Peranakan Legacy
This exhibition showcases the unique
material heritage of the Peranakan or
"local-born" Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia
and the Indonesian Archipelago. Visitors will find
dedicated displays on the textile, beadwork, silverwork,
porcelain, betel-chewing and jewellery traditions of the
Peranakan. Highlights include an exquisite silver and
porcelain pieces from the holdings of the Mariette
Collection; a major private collection of Peranakan art.

Sacred
Threads: Ceremonial Textiles of Southeast Asia
Sacred Threads is an exhibition of 30
pieces of traditional woven textiles, dating between 70
to 100 years old. Alongside the exhibit is a small
selection of ceremonial accessories. The pieces featured
are primarily from the main and outer islands of
Indonesia, with a small representation from Laos,
Kampuchea and Burma.

Alegrķa
Alegrķa, a Spanish word
expressing elation, joy and jubilation, is true to the

Festival 2002
Held from 16 to 31 March 2002, Fashion
Festival is set to place the city on the international
fashion circuit that includes New York, Milan, London,
Paris and Australia. Showcasing international
collections by today's biggest fashion names, this
two-week long event will have Singapore sizzling with
designer frenzy at many of the city's hot spots.
During this period, the city's major shopping malls will

Shakuntala
of the Mahabharata
The drama tells the story of Shakuntala
of the Indian epic Mahabharata. Shakuntala was
born to a lovely nymph, who was assigned to seduce a
powerful sage. Abandoned, Shakuntala grows up in a
hermitage, where a king seduces her, then leaves her.
Shakuntala seeks out the King at his palace but the King
denies their relation, citing her illicit birth as one
of the reasons to reject her. Never giving in or
pleading for mercy, Shakuntala fights a battle of wits
against the Man. With her divine-like wisdom, she wins
herself a husband and for her son, a mighty kingdom.

crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In churches all over
Singapore, special prayer services are held. At the St.
Joseph's Catholic Church on Victoria Street, Catholics
