Heritage Exhibition
View this splendid display of the vibrant multi-ethnic cultures of Singapore. Visitors can gain insights into the lifestyles of the four ethnic groups by trying their hands on the traditional instruments, ethnic costumes and even walk on a five-footway (corridor) of a traditional shop-house, all within one gallery. Daily utilitarian items from yesteryears are also on display.

The museum is open from 9am to 6pm, Tuesdays through Sundays.

Imaging Selves
This exhibition inaugurates the Singapore Art Museum's Permanent Collection Exhibition Programme. Five galleries are dedicated to the display of the museum's fine collection of Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art. Featuring up to 100 works of art, Imaging Selves takes a look at the construction and representation of identity and self through the genre of portraiture.

The Peranakan Legacy
This exhibition showcases the unique material heritage of the Peranakan or "local-born" Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia and the Indonesian Archipelago. Visitors will find dedicated displays on the textile, beadwork, silverwork, porcelain, betel-chewing and jewellery traditions of the Peranakan. Highlights include an exquisite silver and porcelain pieces from the holdings of the Mariette Collection; a major private collection of Peranakan art.

Frank Stella in 2002
The Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI), a collaboration between the Singapore Government and Kenneth E. Tyler, the renowned master printer, commemorates its launch by presenting Singapore's first major exhibition on Frank Stella. The exhibition will include 24 works in mixed media on cast aluminium, mixed media on canvas, collage on paper and a number of stunning maquettes.

Dumpling Festival 2002
This festival honours Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman in ancient China. According to legend, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mi Luo River in protest against corruption and injustice. In their desperate attempt to prevent fish from devouring his body, fishermen furiously beat drums, gongs and cymbals and threw rice into the waters as offerings. The tradition of eating dumplings has since been passed down from generation to generation.

For two weeks, Albert Mall will host the traditional celebration of the Dumpling Festival. Featuring the widest array of rice dumplings from Singapore and the region, the event will also showcase weekend cultural performances and dumpling making demonstrations.An event defintely not to be missed!

Singapore International Dragon Boat Races
Dates to be confirmed.

The Singapore International Dragon Boat Races 2002 will be held in June at the Marina Bay. The races will feature dragon boat race competitions amonst those from international countries like New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand etc. The competitions will also involve teams from schools, clubs, business houses and the universities. In conjunction with the Dragon Boat Races, there will be a range of various cultural shows, exhibitions, arts and handicrafts and activities like kite flying to make the day more enjoyable for families and individuals.

A Cultural Village will be set up that will tell the story behind the Dragon Boat Festival. Children’s Spot Art Competition, Dragon Boat Land Races, Lion Dance Competition and such others will also be held to allow the visitors to take an interactive part. Food and beverages will also be on sale to satisfy those tummies!
