SHADOWHOUSES
- A dance requieum in five reflections
SHADOWHOUSES is a dance theatre piece
that ponders on the constancy and security of the notion
of shelter in our age. The performance features the
luminous but stringent compositions of Arvo Part's Spiegel
im Spiegel and Fur Alina. The reflective tonal space
of Part's music provides the choreographers with
interesting dance space that unfolds like a room within
a room.
To foil the serene reveries of the five
Choreographers' solo pieces, Artistic Director Angela
Liong begins the performance with a new dance piece
based on the unnerving electric strings of George
Crumb's Black Angels.
SHADOWHOUSES recalls memories of lost innocence ,
loneliness of self-confinement, and the tedium and
routine of modern living with powerful dance images. The
performance also hopes to look for the lights that
filter through the current colossal tragedy and grief,
and to find the calm shelter within humanity.

AMERICAN
WOMEN - KAREN LOFTUS
Karen Loftus is a favourite in the stand
up comedy scene in America and overseas. She was the
only American female stand up sharing a stand up bill
with Australian comedian Julia Morris at The Gilded
Balloon at the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. At
Singapore's International Comedy Festival 2001, the only
female in the festival, Karen's solo stand up show
"American Women" played to sold out crowds.
Karen is warm and engaging, but her act is high energy
and hilarious, as she successfully dances the fine line
between smart and silly. Her razor sharp observations,
her crazy characters and stories, make her a winner
every time.

Thaipusam
Witness the faith, devotion and
religious fervour of Hindu devotees at this dramatic
festival. On this day, the birthday of Lord Murugan,
devotees pierce their tongues with skewers and carry
"kavadis" (a semi-circular metal structure) on
their shoulders as a mark of thanksgiving and penance.
Other devotees pull chariots with their bare bodies
while spikes and hooks are embedded in their backs. Look
closely and be awed that no blood is drawn and the
entranced devotees feel no pain as they walk the three-kilometre
route to the chanting and encouragement of families and
friends. The procession starts from the Sri Srinivasa
Perumal Temple at Serangoon Road, Little India and ends
at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple at Tank Road. At the
end of the pilgrimage, devotees experience a sense of
peace and joy while visitors marvel at the power of
faith.
