Ramadan
Every 9th month on the Islamic calendar,
Muslims in Singapore and around the world observe Ramadan, a
test of self-abstinence, determination and devotion. For one
month, Muslims fast from dawn till dusk, breaking their fast
in the evenings with special prayers at the mosques. This
practice of daylight fasting serves to remind Muslims to
empathise with the less fortunate.

Hari
Raya Puasa
Endurance,
abstinence, soul cleansing and fasting during Ramadan are a
test of unflinching faith for Muslim Singaporeans.
At the end of one
month, Muslims rejoice and celebrate Hari Raya Puasa with
vigour and enthusiasm. As they prepare for the occasion,
thousands of glittering lights transform Geylang Serai into
a happening bazaar of makeshift stalls offering a wide array
of festive goods.
On the morning of
Hari Raya Puasa, after an elaborate bath, men and boys head
for the mosque for a special prayer. Past wrongs are
forgiven and families visit the graves of those departed as
a mark of remembrance. Like most Singaporean celebrations,
food is always important! Friends and relatives are treated
to a sumptuous spread of "ketupat" (a rice
dumpling wrapped in coconut leaves), beef rendang, and other
traditional Malay delicacies.
