Asia's
most exciting tropical oceanarium, Underwater World, gives
the visitor a fish-eye view of the mysteries of the sea. Its
submerged tunnel, with a moving walkway, takes visitors past
more than 2,500 marine creatures from 250 species.
Not
all of Underwater World's attractions are below the surface.
The Turtle Pool is home to the endangered Green and
Hawksbill turtles. Visitors will relish the contact with
marine creatures such as starfish and sea cucumbers in the
aptly named Touch Pool.
Be
dazzled by the display of seahorses , the weedy sea dragon
which resembles the mythical Chinese dragon, piranhas,
electric eels and a dugong. Visitors can explore more
exhibits such as the Cave Habitat or the Living Reef.
The
latest exhibits are jellyfish and transgenic fish.
Underwater World is the first aquarium in the world to
exhibit transgenic fish and the first in Southeast Asia to
show jellyfish. Transgenic fish contains
artificially-introduced foreign genetic material from
jellyfish and sea anemone, resulting in fish that radiate a
green or red glow under special lighting. There are three
species of jellyfish on display - Moon Jelly, Sea Nettle and
Upside-down Jellyfish.
Visitors
can also dive with the sharks (shark and reef tanks) for SGD
95 which includes provision of diving gear. You have to be
at least 12 years old and a certified diver. 5 sessions are
available daily (each session approximately 30 minutes in
water) (9.30am - 10.40am, 11.30am - 12.40pm, 1.30pm -
2.40pm, 3.30pm - 4.40pm and 5pm - 6.10pm). Advance booking
is required. To book, call Underwater World at 6275 0030 or
fax at 6275 0036. Bookings are only confirmed upon receipt
of payment.
Organised
dinners in the submerged tunnel or changing exhibit hall can
be arranged for private functions and incentive travel
groups.
