The Shaw family have been wine grape growers since 1975 when Richard and Marie planted five acres in the foothills of McLaren Vale. Their dream was for family involvement, so they set about finding an ideal location for expansion.

Brewery Hill was established circa 1852 as a brandy distillery for Walter Reynell and Sons Limited. From the early 1940's to 1969 the winery had a diverse history as workers accommodation, a mushroom farm and as a place for the restoration of vintage cars.

Built in 1865 to serve the local parish as a Chapel and School, the original stone building was called "Seaview School" to reflect its lofty position overlooking the neighbouring coast. From this hilly perch (the highest in the region) the winery has commanding views of the surrounding McLaren Vale vineyards and St Vincent's Gulf.
