The Nullarbor
A vast treeless plain bordered by The Great Victoria Desert
in the north and the pounding Southern Ocean in the south.
When you stand on the Nullarbor in the daytime, you have an
unbroken 360 degree horizon and a dome of usually blue sky
that seems to reach down to grab you. By night, there's a
canopy of stars brilliant in the clear southern sky.
Underground caves and blowholes add to the magic of travel
in this region.
Great
Australian Bight
To the east, giant sand dune formations as far as the eye
can see; the west, 200km of towering cliffs dropping sheer
to the Southern Ocean. This is the location of one of the
world's great natural spectacles. It's been called the
giant's nursery because each year between 60 to 100 Southern
Right Whales come here to give birth to and spend the winter
playing with their young, while humans gaze in wonder from
the cliffs above.
Gawler Ranges
The result of powerful volcanic activity 1,600-million years
ago, these ranges are a spectacular wilderness area. Domes
of volcanic rock contrast with the stark whiteness of the
many salt lakes in the area. They are renowned and attract
many visitors who come to admire the display of wildflowers
in spring. There are 140 species recorded in the area, which
is also home to the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat, Pygmy
Possums and Hopping Mice.
