The Adelaide Hills offer a taste of country life with great food, fine wines, stunning scenery and quality accommodation. It is an ideal day-trip destination or romantic retreat just 20 minutes from Adelaide.

You can also reach the Adelaide Hills from the Barossa Valley, Fleurieu Peninsula and Murraylands..

Enjoy the changing scenery as you drive through vineyards and market gardens interspersed with traditional Australian bushland and lush pastures.

Each season offers something special in the Adelaide Hills:

  • Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens ablaze with autumn colours

  • A romantic retreat at a cosy bed and breakfast with an open fire

  • Fields of strawberries you can pick and masses of spring flowers

  • A cool retreat from the summer heat by Bridgewater Mill

The many vineyards in the region continue a tradition begun in 1845 when a hock from Echunga was the first Australian wine exported and drunk by Queen Victoria.

The hills are also Adelaide's pantry. There is an abundance of fresh produce in the region with everything from apples and strawberries, to goat's cheese and venison.

The local restaurants are award winners and the German heritage towns of Hahndorf and Lobethal boast many cafes and bakeries as well as antique shops and galleries.

Whatever your indulgence, you're sure to find it in the Adelaide Hills.

Mount Lofty Summit
The panoramic views of Adelaide are spectacular. The Visitor Information Centre has displays of tourist attractions and conservation activities throughout South Australia. The restaurant presents modern Australian cuisine with a Mediterranean influence.

Conservation Parks
There are many conservation and recreation parks in the Adelaide Hills. Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary at Mylor offers an opportunity to see rare nocturnal animals - like the bandicoot, the potoroo and the bettong. Cleland Wildlife Park is home to numerous native species - you can even indulge in some koala cuddling.

The Cedars
From The Cedars, a nineteenth century home, one of Australia’s greatest painters, Sir Hans Heysen, raised eight children and worked from his studio outside Hahndorf. The Cedars is still used by members of the Heysen family, but is open to the public for guided tours with an extensive range of Heysen original paintings on display.

Chain of Ponds Winery
Located at Gumeracha, this is one of the region’s best known vineyards. The winery overlooks picturesque scenery with Italian-style lunches served on the balcony.

National Motor Museum
At Birdwood, the Museum’s motor pavilion houses a collection of classic, vintage and veteran cars and motor cycles.
