Adelaide,
the capital of
South Australia, is a small elegant city in a park.
Set beside the Torrens River between the Adelaide
Hills and the Gulf of St Vincent, it is probably Australia's
best-preserved capital city.
Designed by Colonel William Light in 1836, the city centre is laid
out on a square mile grid of wide streets with gracious colonial
architecture surrounded by 930 hectares of parklands.
All the inner city highlights are within easy walking distance and
it's almost impossible to get lost.
The Mediterranean climate encourages a relaxed and indulgent
lifestyle. This is a city of pubs, cafes, restaurants, fine, fresh
food and wine.
Adelaide's million or so people love to have a good time and host
festivals for everything from the arts, and wine and food to roses,
car races and horse trials.
Every two years, the entire city becomes a stage for the
internationally acclaimed Adelaide Festival of Arts and the Festival
Fringe.

Terrace
This tree-lined boulevard is home to the State's Art
Gallery, Museum, Library,
Government House and Adelaide University.
The
East
End
Sidewalk cafes and bars, bohemian pubs, funky record stores
and boutiques jostle for space in
the city's trendy Rundle Street.
Central
Market
This market is admired worldwide for its unique character that
is a blend of 48 cultures, fresh, delicious produce and
gourmet foods. It seems like everyone in Adelaide shops here
and enjoys its cafes, and noodle bars. Gouger Street, which
borders the southern perimeter, is a dining precinct that
offers cuisines ranging from Argentinean and Malaysian to
Vietnamese and Thai.
Botanic
Gardens
Just off North Terrace, this is a place of beauty and
tranquillity where the restored 1875 Palm House contrasts with
the state-of-the art Bicentennial
Conservatory - the largest greenhouse in the Southern
Hemisphere, which sits beside the new Rose Garden.
Rundle
Mall
If shopping is your favourite pastime, you'll enjoy Rundle
Mall. Adelaide's main shopping precinct is well served with
department stores, specialty shops and boutiques in the many
arcades extending off the Mall.
Suburban shopping
centres
There is also excellent shopping to be enjoyed in the suburban
villages. Burnside
Village; King William Rd, Hyde Park; Jetty Rd, North Adelaide,
Glenelg; Norwood Parade, Unley Rd, Unley; and Port
Adelaide are all within 10-20 minutes of the city.
Beaches
Sixty kilometres of white sandy beachfront make up Adelaide's
metropolitan coast, stretching from Outer Harbour in the
north, to Sellicks Beach in the south.
Golf
Courses
Adelaide also boasts superb golfing facilities with some of
the best inner-city golf courses in Australia. Courses are
also scattered around coastal and inner suburban locations,
including one just 5km away from the Domestic and
International Airport terminals.
