Wineries and Food:
The Southern Downs is the “Wine Capital” of Queensland . The
wineries on the Granite Belt are open for tasting and cellar door sales.
The unique growing and ripening conditions provide the wines with a unique
flavour. Combine the fine wines with superb fresh local produce and you
have the basis for mouth watering regional cuisines. Ripe Warwick brie,
freshly picked asparagus, crunchy Stan Thorpe nashi fruit and luscious
raspberries are just a few of the special ingredients from the Southern
Downs. Enjoy!
Host Farms:
Host farm holidays offer guests an opportunity to experience the
lifestyle enjoyed by country people working on properties. Stay in a
country homestead and savour hearty home-cooked meals and warm, friendly
hospitality. Guests are welcome to participate in the daily activities or
to simply relax and enjoy the tranquillity of country Queensland.
Heritage:
The Southern Downs is one of Queensland’s most historic areas. The
first free settlement, the first school, the start of the wool industry
and the founding of the Commonwealth Police are just a few of the area’s
milestones.
Fishing:
With five major dams and many rivers and streams the Southern Downs
offers great recreational freshwater fishing. The dams have picnic
facilities, shelter sheds, tables and barbeques, providing excellent
venues for boating, water-skiing, swimming and sailing .
National Parks:
Beautiful National Parks are spread throughout the area. There are
five national parks in the Southern Downs and two just across the New
South Wales border. These provide peaceful and scenic spots for camping or
day trips. You’ll marvel at the balancing rocks at Girraween National
Park. Visitors will be rewarded with expansive views and spectacular
wildflower displays. Visit Main Range National Park, World Heritage Listed
for spectacular views, and bushwalking.
