1. Museums & Tributes
to Our Australian History
Much of Australia's pioneer history was made in Queensland's
Outback. Throughout the region there are many attractions which
pay tribute this. Some of the more well know are the Australian
Stockman's Hall of Fame (Longreach), Australian Workers Heritage
Centre (Barcaldine), Qantas Founders Museum (Longreach), and
Waltzing Matilda Centre(Winton).
Each town has it's own small museum which reflects its history.

2. Dinosaurs & Fossils
Queensland's Outback was once part of the "Great Inland
Sea". This has resulted in the region being rich in fossils.
This period dates back 100 million years.
Visitors to the region are able to take tours to many of the sites
where these fossils can be found. For example Lark Quarry near
Winton or the Riversleigh Fossil Fields north of Mount Isa.
Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond has displays of marine fossils and
the Riversleigh Fossil Centre interprets the World Heritage listed
Riversleigh Fossil fields.

3. National Parks
There are over 20 national parks located in the Outback region.
The parks provide the opportunity to explore and experience the
diverse flora & fauna and landscapes of the Outback.

4. Fossicking
Fossicking for precious stones is a pre-occupation for many people
in the hope of striking it rich.
There are a number of fossicking sites throughout Queenslands
Outback. The south-west of the region is particularly well know
for it's opals and visitors are able to fossick either on a tour
or by obtaining a fossicking permit.

5. Fishing
Go fishing in an Outback billabong or along one of the many rivers
and lakes in the region. The place to hear about the best fishing
spots is from a local, a chat at the pub should sort this out.
The likely catch in the Outback is yellowbelly, barramundi, welch
grunter, silver perch, sleepy Cod, murray cod and catfish.

6. Star Gazing
Without the interference of city lights the clear night skies. The
Outback is one of the best places to star gaze. You of course can
do this anywhere however the town of Charleville has some of the
best atmospheric conditions in the area.
The Cosmos Centre is an attraction dedicated to educating visitors
on what they see.
