The Katherine Region situated between the Top End and the Red
Centre has a wealth of natural attractions and activities.
Katherine represents the crossroads of the outback. Ideally
positioned between three areas of outstanding beauty and
environmental significance, it offers the perfect base for
exploring The Gulf Region, Kakadu and the Kimberley.
Katherine is also the site of one of the Territory's most majestic
attractions, Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk). The George is of great
significance to the Jawoyn people who jointly manage it as part of
a larger National Park. A cruise or canoe through the Gorges is
relaxing way to explore, or take a helicopter ride over the top
and experience it's spectacular views.
History plays a big part in Katherine's identify and it's museums
and other attractions make the township a particularly interesting
stop for travellers. Cutta Cutta Caves are a must see and tours to
Aboriginal areas like Manyallaluk are recommended. Don't forget to
visit Mataranka (soothing Thermal Pool), Roper River, Elsey
Homestead, Borrolloola, Gregory National Park and Timber Creek.
