Darwin is the starting point for your holiday to the Top End. To
the north, the colourful religion and art of the Tiwi Islands. To
the south, the kaleidoscope of rainforests, plunge pools, termite
mounds and cycads of Litchfield National Park. To the east, a
number of options including untouched wetlands, birdlife and
fishing in the majestic Mary River Wetlands, the waterfalls,
wetlands and wildlife of World Heritage Listed Kakadu National
Park, the untamed beauty of Arnhem Land and the sailing,
gamefishing and scuba diving playgrounds of the Gove Peninsula.
Darwin surprises most people, because they are not expecting a
bustling, modern capital city of 97,000 people, sitting on one of
Australia's prettiest harbours.
Green and lush with palms and the perfume of frangipanis, Darwin
is the capital of tropical Australia. You'll find plenty of
attractions for your entertainment: nightclubs, theatres, a
casino, a smorgasbord of restaurants, fabulous multicultural
markets and international standard sporting facilities.
The Kakadu Highway takes you east out of Darwin to the Mary River
Wetlands and on to World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park.
Aboriginal paintings, 50,000 years old, at Nourlangie Rock and
Ubirr reveal the ancient legends, ceremonies and the day to day
life of the Park custodians.
During the tropical summer, the Park's famous waterfalls - Jim Jim
Falls and Twin Falls - roar their greetings as you fly over them,
and dawn throws and ethereal mist over Yellow Waters.
