Aqua scene

Darwin

The daily fish feeding ritual began over 40 years ago when
a nearby resident started throwing bread scraps to a few small mullet
at high tide. Today visitors come from near and far to participate in
this unique spectacle. Trays of bread are provided at regular
intervals during the feeding period for hand feeding the mullet and
milkfish. Many other species including catfish, rays, cod, diamond
fish and parrot fish may also be seen in the shallows if you watch
carefully.
Darwin Harbour is subject to tide movements of up to eight metres and
the fish that visit Aquascene can only come to the shore for a few
hours each day, then must return to sea with the tide. The numbers of
fish which arrive and opportunities to hand feed them will vary each
day according to the size of the tide and clarity of the water,
breeding and general seasonal and weather conditions. The most
favourable conditions are generally found when feeding occurs in the
mornings and fish numbers are highest from December to August.
Souvenirs and refreshments are available at the kiosk. As feeding
times change daily with the tides and Aquascene is only open at those
times, it is important to check this information before visiting the
fish feeding.
Remember that if you're going to enter the water to feed the fish,
you'd probably like to wear shorts or even a swimsuit.

Territory Wildlife Park
Address : 60km south of Darwin on Cox Peninsula
Road at Berry Springs
Phone : +61 8 8988 7200
The Territory Wildlife Park is a world-class nature attraction and
conservation park, located only 40 minutes drive south of Darwin.
Operated by the Parks & Wildlife Commission of the NT, the focus
of this Park is on the vast range of the Top End’s native flora and
fauna including many of the regions aquatic species.
The Aquarium, air-conditioned for your comfort, takes you on a journey
along a typical “Top End” river system from where it first forms
up in the escarpment country, past the rock holes and billabongs until
journeys end, when it finally merges with the sea.
Each exhibit replicates a different “pocket” of aquatic life that
can be found along that river system. Your first encounter is with a
towering rock face. A typical escarpment where water ebbs through and
over rock to form the pools that start this river’s journey.
Discover the rock holes and billabongs that the water monitor,
freshwater crocodile, and numerous turtle species call home. The
exhibits are “habitat” based showing life above and below the
water line.
Lose yourself in the walk-through tunnel where barramundi, saratoga,
whip ray and other fresh water species glide gracefully above and
beside you. The tunnel immerses you in a fresh water aquarium and is
one of the Parks most popular and “soothing” attractions. Beyond
the tunnel, get nose to nose with a 3.6 metre salt-water crocodile.
See how effortlessly this “hunter in hiding” floats
semi-submerged. The photographic opportunities are outstanding.
The Territory Wildlife Park is huge. Allow between four hours and a
full day to see all its attractions including Reptiles, Wetlands,
Goose Lagoon, Kangaroo and Friends, the Foreign Invaders, Dingos and
Emus, the Nocturnal House, Aviaries and Monsoonal Forest Walk.
Displays feature daily from 10am including Birds of Prey, Pelican
Feeding and Bat-chat!
The Territory Wildlife Park is one “walk on the wild side” you
won’t find anywhere else in the world. It offers exceptional value
for a day out so don’t miss it. Admission fees apply.
